| The Carry Ons' music hall heritage makes them the perfect candidate for translation to the stage. The first Carry On stage show, Carry On London, ironically first opened in Birmingham in September 1973. The show was such a success that its run in London's West End lasted 18 months, packing in audiences every night. It also spawned two singles; Sid James' wonderful "Our House/She's Gone" and Kenny Ball's "Smile, Smile, Smile"
Subsequent Carry On stage shows capitalised on the seaside postacrd humour of the films, with Carry On Laughing playing in Scarborough in 1976 and Wot a Carry On in Blackpool playing at the popular resort's North Pier. Recent years have seen a number of plays and one man shows which focus on the story behind the films. David Benson's "Think no Evil of Us" enjoys continued success 8 years after it first opened and Terry Johnson's "Cleo, Camping, Emmannuelle & Dick" (sometimes known as "Cor Blimey", to capitalise on the reputation of the teleplay it later became) enjoyed enormous critical acclaim, including a 1998 Olivier Award. The Carry Ons' music hall heritage makes them the perfect candidate for translation to the stage.
